2,278 Jews lived in Hincesti in 1897 from a total population of 5,044. 10 Jewish businesses are found in the Klyachkin directory of 1901 and 122 Jewish businesses are found in the Business Directory of 1923-24. 1523 Jews lived in Hincesti in 1930. According to the report "Jewish Heritage Sites and Monuments in Moldova", created by the United States Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad, 2010: The area of the Jewish cemetery in Hinceşti covers an area of 40,000 square meters and contains more than 500 gravestones, about half of which are toppled or broken. The oldest stones are datable to the second half of the 19th century. The cemetery is surrounded by a fence and has a gate that can be locked. The site is occasionally cleaned, but vegetation overgrowth is a constant problem. Some restoration work, including repairing broken stones and clearing of vegetation, has been carried out. There is a monument to victims of the Holocaust located in the cemetery. 222 burial records with 160 photographs are uploaded to JOWBR. There are 12 images that you can access at Unknown Graves at Hincesti cemetery. 3 On many of the tombstones after the name of deceased there one or more names of Jews who died in the war (1941-1945), on front or during evacuation to the East. All of the names were entered and available. Language of the inscriptions: mostly Russian, some are written in Hebrew and Russian. Dates: Burials in this cemetery are from 1950s. The last burial dated 1999. The most common Last Names are GITMAN – on 22 tombstones KREYMER – on 10 UNGER – on 10 FELDMAN – on 8 There are a total of 94 different Last Names found. The Hincesti Jewish Cemetery needs restoration work. Most likely there are another 200+ tombstones that were not accessible. In order to know who was buried there we need to assemble a restoration team to cut trees, bushes, and repair or build a fence, uncover some tombstones and raise others, and clean the inscriptions. Volunteers come forward, get organized and do this important work for this and some other cemeteries in Bessarabia and Moldova.
