Martyrs' Cemetery

Martyrs' Cemetery

_______________________ This is the cemetery where the remains of 900 partisans that fought for Tirana are buried. Here one can also find the 12m statue of Mother Albania built in 1972 (Monumenti Nëna Shqipëri). The statue figuratively represents the country as a mother guarding over the eternal slumber of those who gave their lives for her. A wreath of laurels and a star are held in her upright hand. Enver Halil Hoxha was buried here in 1985 but exhumed in 1992 and reinterred on the other side of the city in People's Cemetery.

Böhönye German Soldiers Cemetery

Böhönye German Soldiers Cemetery

📍 Böhönye, Marcali járás, Hungary

This burial site contains the remains of 300 German soldiers who originally rested at the cemetery of the 1st Mountain Division in Böhönye. As part of a broader effort to consolidate and preserve war graves, additional reburials were carried out between 1990 and 1993. During this period, the remains of German fallen soldiers were transferred from various locations throughout the district to this central cemetery. As a result of these reinterments, the cemetery in Böhönye has become the final resting place of 2,080 German soldiers who lost their lives during the Second World War. The site stands today as a place of remembrance, honoring those who fell in combat and preserving the historical memory of the tragic events of the war. Maintained as a war graves cemetery, Böhönye serves not only as a burial ground but also as a solemn memorial dedicated to reflection, reconciliation, and the remembrance of history for future generations.

Cimitirul Vechi Cacica

Cimitirul Vechi Cacica

📍 Cacica, România

The annexation of Bucovina by the Habsburg Empire in 1775 marks the beginning of a new era for this territory. The name Bucovina originates in that period and comes from the name of the beech (tree) (in German - Buche, in Slavic - buk). Thus, the Upper Land of Moldova became the Buchenwald - Land of the Beech Forests - under the Habsburg rule. Prospecting the salt deposits in Cacica by the Austrians and the mining decision turned the surroundings of the saltwater springs into poles of attraction. The salt mine attracted foreign populations which were looking for a better living standard, but also some Romanians in Moldova and Transylvania. This is also largely due to the advantages newcomers received: lower taxes, less statute labour days, a piece of land exempt from taxes in the first years, and the right to use forest land for free in order to build houses. When the works were started i
