His novel At Midnight, a Star Will Fall is regarded as a foundational work in Romania's crime fiction literature. Its success stems from both its impeccable technique and its realistic narrative, reflecting the struggles of Romanian troops to liberate Transylvania. Born in Brăila on November 21, 1910, Theodor Constantin experienced a difficult childhood; from the age of seven, he grew up in an orphanage where he encountered cruelty and indifference from those tasked with the children's care. His studies in philosophy and theology at Cernăuți exposed him to the harrowing realities of the Holocaust, particularly the deportation of Jews to Transnistrian camps.
