In memoriam

Dušica Spasić was a Serbian nurse who died of smallpox, during an outbreak of the disease in Yugoslavia in 1972, the largest outbreak of smallpox in Europe after the Second World War. Spasić worked in the trauma department of the First Surgical Clinic in Belgrade. While admitting patients, Spasić contracted smallpox from Latif Mumdžić, a teacher from the vicinity of Tutin, who arrived at the clinic from a hospital in Čačak on 9 March 1972, and who died a day later, without a proper diagnosis.
