Hasan Kafija Pruščak

1544 – 1615

In memoriam

Bosnian (Bosniak) philosopher, theologian, biographer and historian. His full name was Hasan Kafi bin Turhan bin Davud bin Jakub ez-Zibi el-Akhisari el-Bosnevi, known by his literary name Kafija, and identified by markers of his native and ethnic background as ez-Zibi, el-Akhisari, and el-Bosnevi. Born in 1544 in Prusac, near Donji Vakuf, he hailed from the village of Vukovsko, claimed in his autobiography. His lineage traces back to Jakub, who converted to Islam in 1463 during the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia. Hasan Kafi studied in Istanbul for nine years before becoming the cadi of Prusac in 1583. Renowned for his scholarly prowess, he authored at least 17 works across various disciplines and served as the Kadi of Srijem in 1587. His intellectual contributions, especially "The Foundations of Wisdom on the Order of the World," earned him recognition even from Sultan Mehmed III. Later appointed as the lifelong cadi of Prussian cadiluk, he continued teaching, writing, and contributing to military campaigns until his passing in 1615 or 1616, leaving behind a legacy of educational institutions and infrastructure developments in Prusac.
