He was the son of Herward IX, Freiherr von Auersperg, Lord of Sissek, and his wife, Felizitas Katzianer, Freiin von Katzenstein. He was married at Ljubljana on 6 Sep 1639 to Freiin Elisabeth von Lamberg, with whom he had issue.
