He was a novelist, dramatist, doctor of philosophy, short story writer and poet. He puts an end to the traditional novel and remains in Romanian literature, in particular, as the initiator of the modern novel. Between 1916 - 1918 he participated as an officer in the First World War, and the experience lived now is found in the novel " The last night of love, the first night of war" (1930). In 1916, he is mobilized and goes to the front, where he is wounded. After an internship in a military hospital, he ends up on the front line again, but is taken prisoner by the Hungarians. During a German bombardment, he lost his hearing in one ear, and the disability will mark him for the rest of his life. In 1918 he will be released from the German camp, returning to Bucharest. As early as 1920, he participates in the meetings of the Sburătorul cenacle led by Eugen Lovinescu, and publishes his first poems in the magazine of the same name.
